When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters-characters that are often described as “real people.” She began her career writing training manuals and computer code for the IRS, but something was always missing. Her “dual” nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan, and she enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories. Lorraine was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, but soon after moved to Texas. She is the daughter of a British beauty (her mom won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero, (the Joker on the original Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. No doubt because growing up, watching movies with her mom, she was taught that the best movies “won’t half make you cry.” Lorraine Heath has always had a soft spot for emotional love stories.

(no relation to Edward), but I wondered, while reading it, whether Robert had thought of “The Known World” as he drafted his own book. Jones’s name doesn’t appear among the dozens of authors, artists, entertainers, and other luminaries-living and dead-called upon in the acknowledgments of “ The Prophets,” the début novel by Robert Jones, Jr. Set in a fictional county in antebellum Virginia, “The Known World” is an epic of slavery told through an onslaught of the banal though the book was marketed through its most sensational element-the character of Henry Townsend, an enslaved Black man who becomes a slave owner himself-its power lies in how it recounts the flurry of names, places, and interactions that constitute one node in a devastating American network. He was discussing a short story he’d written, “ Old Boys, Old Girls,” but the same could be said of “ The Known World,” Jones’s début and only novel to date, which had just been awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Jones said in a 2004 interview in The New Yorker. “A long, long time ago, maybe twenty or so years ago, I told myself that even if you have one page about a person eating his lunch you should have a history in your head,” the author Edward P. Photograph by Alberto Vargas / RainRiver Images Robert Jones, Jr.,’s début novel beckons forth ancestors of various kinds to lend the weight of their influence. They also find comfort in the factories and unions working alongside other butches, despite the harshness and bigotry that exists within the patriarchal hierarchy that dooms them to fail. Leaving high school before graduation, Jess finds their people in the dyke bars of Niagara Falls and New York City, exploring the roles of butch/femme and experiencing police brutality for wearing men’s clothes. Stone Butch Blues follows protagonist, Jess Goldberg, a gender nonconforming youthwhose parents are less than loving, and whose peers are largely hateful, some even violent and sexually abusive. The novel, first published by the feminist small press Firebrand Books 25 years ago, won the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction in 1993, but has since been seen as a seminal trans text, with Feinberg’s own identity “cross the cultural boundaries of gender,” the author and activist coming to self-identify as both a lesbian and trans. Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues is one of the most influential pieces of literature in the queer canon, especially for lesbian and biwomen and trans people who found themselves included in the semi-autobiographical story of a gender non-conforming person moving through the world as a working class “he-she” in upstate New York in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. How do you go about writing for this older age range and choosing which vocabulary you should use in these books?Īngelina and Twinkle are great characters for early readers, and it's been fun creating new stories for young fans who are ready to read by themselves. Q: You have transitioned the Angelina Ballerina stories from picture books into Ready-to-Read early readers. As for favorite stories, I have many, but Angelina Ballerina was my very first book, and the story that started Angelina's journey, so it has a special place in my heart. Angelina is a wonderful character to write about, she's passionate and determined, loyal and lovable, she's full of flaws but always bounces back. I was thrilled when Angelina Ballerina was published in 1983, but I never imagined she'd become such a favorite with young book lovers around the world! Much credit goes to Helen Craig's magical illustrations that so beautifully capture Angelina and all the charms of Mouseland and Chipping Cheddar. If you had to choose, which would be your favorite one? Q: When you wrote the first Angelina Ballerina picture book back in the 1980s, did you ever expect that the character would still be a comfort and a friend to children so many years later?
